Managing AWS Reservations

Buying AWS EC2 and RDS servers on reservations offers significant savings compared to on-demand instances.

But do you know which servers are covered by which reservations?

AWS Reservations utilization shows you hours per instance size, but to exactly which EC2 or RDS servers are using those hours.

Cost Explorer Tools

The AWS console provides an amazing set of features and functionality with the click of a button. But when it comes to managing reservations, the tools, including the Reservations reports, don’t make it easy to see which AWS resources match with your purchased reservations.

Why? Because the AWS tools are built for teams working with elastic workloads, often changing deployed servers and services. Many of us don’t actually work that way. We deploy services with very stable workloads, like business applications for our organizations, and they run on the same server for months or years.

Asset Tracking Links Your AWS Services with Reservations

We had the same problem. We would spend hours every month trying to figure out which new reservations to buy. Add to that the cost of making a mistake. You can sell incorrect EC2 reservations back to the marketplace, but you need to keep RDS reservations for the full term, even if they aren’t matching anything. So if your reservations don’t match up, you can end up paying extra instead of saving!

We built a tool using RT’s Asset Tracking feature to manage our AWS instances, link them to reservations, and help purchase new reservations as needed. Now we manage our resources using our AWS dashboard in a fraction of the time, and we have more coverage than we ever had before.

Key Features

  • Import and track EC2 and RDS instances as assets

  • Import Reservations

  • Use the Link Tool to connect reservations with matching EC2 and RDS resources

  • Use the AWS dashboard to find instances without linked reservations

  • Watch for expiring reservations and know which instances they are associated with

  • Fields are in the same order as the reservation request form, making it easier to request new reservations
